Tom relaxed slightly.
“Everyone knows my name. That doesn’t scare me.”
Sarah nodded.
“I’m sure it doesn’t.”
Then she looked at the other officers.
“May I ask how long this checkpoint has been operating today?”
Nobody answered.
Tom stepped in.
“Enough questions.”
Sarah ignored him.
“How many citations have you issued?”
Silence.
“How many were paid in cash?”
The atmosphere changed instantly.
One officer looked uncomfortable.
Another looked at the ground.
Tom’s face turned cold.
“You’re really pushing your luck.”
Sarah put her phone away.
“No, Sergeant. I think you’ve been pushing your luck for a long time.”
Tom laughed.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
Sarah gave him a calm look.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking.”
