At eight twenty, a tow truck arrived.
The driver backed toward the black luxury SUV parked in my driveway.
Carla ran outside barefoot.
“What are you doing?” she screamed.

Louis turned on me.
“You called them?”
“The vehicle is registered in my name. The down payment came from a fraudulent loan against my house. It is being returned.”
“My equipment is in there!”
“Then remove it.”
Neighbors stepped onto their porches as Louis and Carla unloaded designer bags, golf clubs, unopened electronics, and six cases of promotional energy drinks from the SUV.
For years, I had protected Louis from embarrassment. That morning, I stopped.
At nine forty-five, cars began filling the street.
Marlene arrived first with two boxes of printed documents.
My cousin Ruth came next. Then neighbors, church friends, Louis’s business acquaintances, and almost everyone who had attended the party. Some looked annoyed. Others curious.

Louis saw them through the window.
“What did you do?” he whispered.

At ten, I asked everyone to sit in the dining room.
No one touched the food still left from the night before.
The dog bowl sat at the center of the table.
Louis remained standing.
“This is ridiculous,” he said. “My father is confused and upset. He’s been declining for months.”
Several people shifted uncomfortably.
I looked at Carla.
Her phone was already recording.
“Good,” I said. “Keep filming.”
I placed the first stack of papers on the table.
“Last night, my son said I was a freeloader in my own home. Many of you laughed. Some of you did not. Before anyone decides whether it was a joke, I would like to explain who has been paying for what.”
I read the total.
