Part 1: A Celebration Built On Deception
“Noah is my only son, and one day every division of Bennett Agricultural Systems will belong to him.”
My husband spoke those words in French because he believed I understood only English. Standing behind a tall planter on the private terrace of an elegant restaurant in Sacramento, California, I listened as seven years of marriage ended during a celebration honoring another woman’s baby.
My name is Caroline Bennett, and at thirty-five, I served as chief financial officer of Bennett Agricultural Systems, a family-controlled corporation importing automated food-processing equipment from Toulouse, France. My husband, Adrian Bennett, was the company’s chief executive officer, although I negotiated our credit facilities, supervised payroll for more than two hundred employees, and prevented three poorly planned expansions from destroying the business.
The gathering had supposedly been organized for Vanessa Cole, an unmarried college friend whom Adrian claimed to be supporting through a difficult year. However, his mother, Margaret Bennett, carried three-month-old Noah through the dining room as though presenting a future chairman to assembled shareholders.
“He has the Bennett forehead and his grandfather’s serious eyes,” Margaret announced repeatedly. “True blood always reveals itself, regardless of circumstances.”
Vanessa wore an ivory designer dress purchased through one of Adrian’s corporate cards. When she greeted me, her smile appeared gentle enough to deceive anyone who had not reviewed the charges.
“Thank you for attending, Caroline. Adrian has been extraordinarily generous because he understands how difficult raising a baby alone can become.”
Alone was an interesting description for someone whose luxury apartment, vehicle, medical bills, jewelry, and household expenses were being financed by my husband.
Three years earlier, Adrian and I had visited a fertility specialist after unsuccessfully trying to have children. The physician concluded that my reproductive health was normal, while Adrian had a serious male fertility condition that made natural conception extremely unlikely.
Outside the clinic, he had grasped both my hands and begged for secrecy.
“My mother would consider this a humiliation, and the board already believes I depend too heavily upon you. Please let everyone assume we are still investigating the problem together.”
