I Adopted a Boy After Promising God I’d Give Another Child a Home If My Daughter Survived – On His 18th Birthday, a Stranger Came to My Door and Revealed the Truth About Him
“Petra?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Mr. Frankson. I’m an attorney. I’d like a moment of your time regarding your son, Noah. Privately, if possible.”
“Noah? Is he in some kind of trouble?”
“No, ma’am. Nothing like that.” His voice was flat, the way people sound when they’ve delivered bad news too many times to put any emotion into it. “I represented Noah’s late parents. I’m sorry, but before they died, they gave me very clear instructions to tell you the whole truth about him on this very day.”
“Is he in some kind of trouble?”
Mr. Frankson unzipped the folder and pulled out a sealed envelope.
My name was on the front in blue ink, in handwriting I didn’t recognize, though something about the slant of it snagged at me.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry for the timing. Please open it. You’ll understand everything once you read the note inside. Noah kept this from you, even though he knew the truth.”
My name was on the front.
The attorney pressed the envelope into my hand, tipped his head once, and walked back down the steps toward a plain sedan at the curb. No card. No number. Just gone.
“Mom?”
Mia stood in the hallway behind me, a roll of tape in one hand and a confused look on her face.
“Who was that?”
“Nobody, sweetheart. Wrong address.”
“Who was that?”
“You sure? You look weird.”
“I’m sure. Go finish the streamers. Noah’s friends will be here any minute.”
My daughter watched me for another second, then walked away.
I stepped onto the porch and pulled the door shut behind me.
My hands were shaking so badly I couldn’t get a fingernail under the flap.
I tore the top clean off instead.
“You look weird.”
