My Wealthy Sister Never Paid When We Went Out – After Our Last Dinner, I Paid the Bill and Handed Her a Folded Paper I’d Kept for Three Years

She wasn’t.

Not even a little.

She’d ordered the dry-aged ribeye, two craft cocktails, and a lobster mac and cheese to “share,” though she’d eaten almost all of it herself.

Then she’d insisted we couldn’t leave without trying the restaurant’s famous chocolate soufflé.

I’d ordered a house salad and iced tea.

The total sat neatly printed at the bottom of the check.

$312.45

Cassie leaned closer. “You can grab this one, right?”

Not, “Would you mind?”

Not, “Can we split it?”

Just the quiet confidence of someone asking the sun to rise tomorrow.

“I’ll Venmo you as soon as we get home.”

She smiled.

The same smile I’d seen more times than I could count.

The one that always meant she had absolutely no intention of paying me back.

I looked at the check.

Then at my older sister.

She owned three rental properties.

She reminded everyone of that fact every chance she got.

Tonight alone she’d spent almost an hour talking about passive income.

“My newest duplex practically pays for itself,” she’d said while swirling her second cocktail.

“You have to make your money work for you.”

I almost laughed.

My money had certainly been working.

Just not for me.

It had been working for Cassie for years.
