My SIL Held Her Wedding at My Grandma’s Lake House but Destroyed the Garden and Turned the Yard Into a Dump – So I Brought Her a Wedding Gift She’d Never Forget
I looked through the window at the wilting flowers.
“You need to come back and restore everything.”
She laughed. “Restore what? It’s dirt and flowers.”
“The roses were planted for Grandma’s anniversary. The peonies were planted when I was born.”
“Flowers grow back! Instead of wasting time calling me, you should’ve started cleaning. You own the place. The wedding’s over!”
Then she hung up.
“Restore what? It’s dirt and flowers.”
For several seconds, I remained in the kitchen with the silent phone against my ear.
Normally, Zac would’ve asked me to calm down and promised to talk to her later.
This time, he looked at the ruined garden. Then at Grandma’s cushion dripping muddy water onto the floor.
“What do you need?”
I set my phone on the counter.
“Grandma’s garden map.”
He frowned. “The big one?”
“The one with every plant, measurement, and memory.”
Normally, Zac would’ve asked me to calm down and promised to talk to her later.
I walked to the pantry and pulled down the cedar box Grandma had used for seeds.
The brass latch clicked open.
Inside were hundreds of small paper envelopes, twine, wooden markers, and her old numbering stamps.
Zac looked from the box to the garden.
“What are you planning?”
I picked up the first empty packet.
“Kelsey said flowers grow back.” I pressed the number 1 onto the front. “She’s going to learn why.”
“What are you planning?”
