I almost laughed. Nobody had asked me that question in weeks.
“I’m not asking anyone to trust me.”
“The bottles need sterilizing.”
He walked into the kitchen.
“Show me.”
Within an hour he’d sterilized bottles, mastered the warmer, and finished assembling the second bassinet that Trevor had left half-finished.
Frank never once acted like he deserved credit. He simply looked around the room. Found the next job. Did it.
“The bottles need sterilizing.”
That first night I thanked him.
“I really appreciate you coming.”
Frank didn’t look up from washing bottles.
“Please don’t.”
I frowned. “What?”
“I’m not here because I’m a good man.”
The room fell quiet.
He dried his hands slowly.
“I’m here because I know exactly what happens when a father leaves.”
“I’m here because I know exactly what happens when a father leaves.”
I stood still.
“I’ve spent 32 years wondering who my son became without me.” He swallowed. “I don’t need to wonder anymore.”
