I turned toward Clark.

“You called Zane your brother. Yet you let him die believing his daughter had rejected him.”

Mara placed two objects on the table.

The unopened fifth-birthday card.

And the transfer document carrying Clark’s signature.

She touched the card first.

“This is what my father sent me.”

Then she touched the financial record.

“And this is what you took.”

No one looked away.

Clark attempted one final defence.

“The company was in danger. I was protecting everyone.”

Zane’s sister stood, walked to the memorial table, and turned the photograph of Clark and Zane face down.

PART 3

The board immediately placed Clark on leave.

Two weeks later, after lawyers verified the records, he was removed from the company.

The money was restored using his ownership share.

Mara finally received the funds Zane had intended for her.

But she cried more over the letters than the money.

“I spent my entire life believing he forgot me.”

“He was wrong to remain silent,” I said. “He waited far too long. But he never forgot you.”

Before his death, Zane had revised his estate and left me voting control of the company.

Once the investigation ended, I transferred a modest ownership share to Mara.

She stared at the documents.

“You don’t owe me this.”

“No,” I replied. “But your father did. And now I do too.”

The company had survived partly because money intended for Mara had been taken.

I refused to let that injustice remain hidden.

Mara worried that her existence had damaged my memories of my marriage.

I told her the truth.

“Thirty-four years with Zane do not make you my enemy. You did not steal my husband or erase our life together. You are part of the man I loved, whether I knew about you or not.”

That was when she finally allowed herself to cry.

Our relationship did not become simple overnight.

She had questions I could not answer.

I carried anger toward Zane that existed beside my grief.

Some days, I missed him desperately.
